Product Ad, VFX Simulations, 3D Animation
the brief
I was tasked with creating a 5-10 second ad for a product. The ad must include either a volumes or fluids simulation that is integral to the concept of my advertisement.
I chose to create an ad for the Indian jewelry brand, Tanishq, showcasing their wedding ring collection.

I took this opportunity to create a brand film that represented my culture, my interests, and my upbringing. I love jewelry (some of the jewelry featured in the footage are items I made!) and I’ve been attending Indian weddings since I was a child. If you’ve ever been to one, you know they are an extravagant, gorgeous spectacle.
I wanted the footage to feel like a behind-the-scenes peek into what getting ready for these events feels like - the moments that are shared between women as every guest shows up in their best, most extravagant clothing. I wanted to make the jewelry feel like it’s part of the most important moments of our lives. I chose to use water simulations to showcase the shine and the light reflections of the diamond ring when surrounded by splashes, highlighting the beauty of the ring along with all the jewelry footage.

Testing splashes with 3D objects and fluids, and making sure render times are efficient.
I explored various forms of fluid dynamics in Houdini to learn how to accomplish splashes and fluid movement for this project.
Practicing movements of fluids along a spline. I varied properties such as time scale, max influence radius, and particle separation, to test different results.
Filming
I wanted the footage to feel vintage and to look like it was filmed on a camcorder. I went for soft lighting, and edited the footage in post to give it noise and burned edges.

conclusion
I got to explore different media for this project, and worked with a camera and was able to create footage in the mood I wanted despite not having much experience with film lighting. I had so much fun exploring water simulations and using them to showcase the beauty and shine of the jewelry products. Getting to integrate my passion for jewelry and my love for my culture in this project, and shooting with my friends was a blast! This project made me want to continue to experiment with incorporating different types of media into my future work.
